Bryant Barracuda Swim Team announces swim camps

by Rob on Apr 29, 2009 at 6:05 PM

By Kirk Stewart

What is it about swimming that attracts children? It can be early spring, quite chilly outside but there are kids ready to swim. They may not be able to breathe for a second or two after they plunge in, but they still sing the praises of how much fun it is. Late summer when it really gets can’t-stand-on-the-sidewalk hot and children don’t want to go anywhere, mix in the phrase “but they have a pool” and it’s a completely new ballgame.

The Bryant Barracuda Swim Team is announcing a couple of swim camps. The first one will be Friday, May 1 – Sunday, May 3. The next camp is Friday, May 15 – Sunday, May 17. The cost is $30 for one swimmer, $40 for two swimmers and $50 for three swimmers. Both camps will be held at the UALR Aquatic Center in Little Rock. For more information and to register go to www.salinecountyswimteam.com.

VAN BUREN — Sparked by a big day from Christen Kirchner, the Bryant Lady Hornets clinched the undisputed 7A-Central Conference championship on Tuesday, April 28, with a doubleheader sweep of the Van Buren Pointerettes, 6-3 and 10-0.

Kirchner, at the end of a marathon at-bat, slugged a three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning of the first game to provide the winning margin. That win secured the No. 1 seed from the conference to the Class 7A State Tournament in Bentonville this weekend. The romp in the second game, which secured sole possession of first place in the league, was highlighted by freshman Peyton Jenkins’ no-hitter, the first of her high school career.

It’s the third conference title in the last four years for Bryant and head coach Lisa Stanfield.

The Lady Hornets finish league play with a 12-2 mark. They take a 20-7 overall record into State where they’re set to open on Saturday, May 2, at noon against the winner of the Friday contest between Van Buren (the fifth seed from the Central) and Springdale Har-Ber (the fourth seed from the West).

Bryant has won nine of its last 10 games.

Hornets wrap up regular season with 11-1 win over Wolves

by Rob on Apr 27, 2009 at 9:10 PM

By Rob Patrick

BRYANT, AR — As tune-up games go, Monday's regular-season finale went pretty well for the Bryant Hornets baseball team. Three pitchers including starter Caleb Milam, who was making his first varsity appearance since April 14, got some work in and combined on a four-hitter; senior Tyler Sawyer got a night off to rest the leg he tweaked on Saturday at Pine Bluff; and the Hornets reached double digits in runs scored for the fourth time in the last five games.

They also flashed some leather. Caleb Garrett in center, Hunter Mayall at third, Kaleb Jobe at short and, later with Jobe on the mound, Jordan Taylor at short all made fine plays. It was the Hornets second consecutive errorless effort.

The 11-1 win over Lake Hamilton also kept their momentum going. The fifth win in a row and 10th in the last 12 games makes them 22-7 going into the Class 7A State Tournament which begins Friday in Fayetteville and Springdale. With the championship of the 7A-Central Conference, the Hornets will open at noon on Saturday at Springdale's Randall Tyson Center against the survivor of a Friday game.
