Trying to slow down Bryant Lady Hornets freshman guards McKenzie Adams and Kiara Moore, the Sheridan Lady Stingers freshman team deployed in a triangle-and-two defense to start their game at the Bryant Middle School gym on Thursday night.

It took a little while to get adjusted but, with the help of a pair of 3-point bombs by Logan Davis, the Lady Hornets forced the Lady Stingers to forego that strategy. And, with withering pressure defense, the Lady Hornets rolled to a 42-20 win that kept them unbeaten on the season.

Bryant is 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the South Division of the Central Arkansas Junior High Conference going into Monday’s game at Mount St. Mary’s Academy in Little Rock.

Coming off games in which she’d scored 24 and 26 points, respectively, Adams was held to 12 points by Sheridan but that still led all scorers. Moore, after being held scoreless in the first quarter, went on to score 9 points to go with Davis’ 8, which all came in the first half. Courtney Davidson pitched in with 7, Hayley Murphy 4 and Whitney Myer 2.

At the end of the first quarter in their game against the Sheridan Freshman Stingers on Thursday night, the Bryant Hornets freshman team was struggling. They hit just 1 of 11 shots from the field, turned the ball over four times and made a free throw in two tries.

They found themselves trailing the visiting Stingers, 6-3.

But the second quarter was completely different. Picking it up on the defensive end and extending their defense, the Hornets went on a 12-0 run that extended to an 18-2 second quarter on their way to a 38-19 win.

When Little Rock Catholic freshman quarterback Carson Case broke a 50-yard touchdown run on an option keeper to answer the Bryant Hornets opening score on Thursday night, it looked like there might be another high-scoring shootout in the offing.

The two combatants from the South Division of the Central Arkansas Junior High Conference were tied 6-6 at the time but, the Bryant defense stepped up at that point and didn’t allow another Rockets first down (let alone a score) until the fourth quarter. They lay claim to three turnovers during that stretch.

In the meantime, the Bryant offense piled up a 33-6 lead. With the reserves finishing up, Catholic trimmed the margin to a final score of 33-18.

NORTH LITTLE ROCK — All else being equal, bigger, faster, stronger will win the day in most football games. A team can try to finesse and execute its way to victory over such a team, perhaps taking advantage of turnovers or kicking game mistakes — certainly something Bryant football teams have succeeded in doing much of the last decade.

But if the execution is a little off and the penalties and turnovers even out or go the other team’s way, it’s tough to overcome.

And such was the case for the Bryant Hornets freshman team on Thursday, Oct. 8, against the North Little Rock Junior Wildcats.

The Hornets stayed with them for a while thanks to a couple of big plays but North Little Rock answered those and added more on the way to a 38-15 victory in the South Division of the Central Arkansas Conference.
