Allstate Cubs find a way to earn close wins over Everett, Olly Olly Oxen

The Rena Gilliam Allstate Cubs appear to be developing a knack for winning close[more] games in the Bryant Athletic Association Instructional League.

On Tuesday, April 30, the Cubs scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to snap a 6-6 tie with the Everett Buick GMC team and win 7-6.

On Wednesday, May 1, they built a 6-0 lead and held on for a 6-4 win over Olly Olly Oxen.

The Cubs, managed by Patrick Schroeder, include Brayden Beenken, Noah Britton, Andrew Bush, Grant Daves, Drake Holland, Brayton Liggin, Gabe McElyea, Andrew Schroeder, Kaden Sweat, Peyton Sykes and Seth Webb.

Everett Buick GMC, managed by Brad Benson, includes Jack Baker, Romere Bennett, Gavyn Benson, Gabriel Colclasure, Takoda Dayberry, Ryan Horn, Ethan Ledbetter, Staunton Rushing, Aiden Stout, Jaxson Weser and Gage Wilder.

Olly Olly Oxen, managed by Jake Ecker, includes Trey Akins, Monte Dismuke Jr., Ryan Ecker, Maverick Kester, Mitchell, Oldham, Sean Riedmueller, Justin Rising, Tate Settle, Hudson Thomason, Jack Vick and Jackson Whittaker.

In Tuesday’s game, Sykes reached second on an error in the bottom of the fourth then scrambled home with the winning run on a base hit to center by Liggin.

Everett broke out to a 4-0 lead by scoring the one-inning limit in the opening frame. Ledbetter reached second on an error and sprinted home with the first run on a single by Rushing. Stout reached second on another miscue to set the stage for Benson who doubled both home to make it 3-0. Benson scored moments later on Dayberry’s hit.

The Cubs whittled a run off the lead in the bottom of the first and another in the second after holding Everett in the top of the second.

Liggin scored the first run when he singled, advanced to second on a one-out hit by Schroeder, to third on a single by Webb and scored on a clutch two-out infield hit by McElyea.

In the second, Daves beat out an infield hit then scored all the way from first on Holland’s double.

Everett was retired in order in the top of the third and Allstate grabbed the lead with a max inning instigated by Schroeder. An error allowed Webb to reach second as Schroeder raced to third. Sweat followed with an RBI single to make it 4-3.

McElyea got Webb home with a hit and Britton drove in Sweat with the go-ahead tally. Daves grounded into a force a third but, with two down, Holland came through with the hit that made it 6-4.

In the bottom of the inning, Everett got it going again and plated two to tie. Stout’s triple with one out got things started. With two down, Dayberry singled him in. A base hit from Horn put Dayberry in scoring postion for Baker who tied it with an RBI double.

With three runs in the first, two in the second and one in the third, the Cubs built a lead that the Oxen rallied to cut to two only to run out of time before a fifth inning could be played.

The Cubs’ first inning began with a double by Liggin and singles by McElyea, Schroeder and Daves. Beenken added an RBI on a groundout.

In the second, Sweat reached on an error and Brittan doubled but remained at second and third with two out. But Liggin plugged the gap in left-center for a two-run triple to make it 5-0.

The third-inning run was scored by Schroeder who reached second on an error and scored on a single by Daves.

Though Olly Olly Oxen had base-runners in each, it was unable to dent the plate until the fourth. Ecker started the really with an infield hit then Settle reached on an error. Oldham doubled in a run and a single by Kester plated another.

With one out, Reidmueller reached second on an error as Oldham and Kester scored.

Sweat singled to open the top of the fifth but time ran out at that point and the Cubs held on for the win.
