Bryant 12’s complete overwhelming march to tourney crown at Sherwood

SHERWOOD — The Bryant 12-and-under Cal Ripken League All-Stars not only won the Fathers Day tournament at[more] Sherwood over the weekend, they dominated it, outscoring the opposition by a whopping 56-10 in five games.

Bryant finished up with an 11-1 romp over Little Rock Junior Deputy in the title game on Sunday after dismissing the Sylvan Hills Razorbacks, 15-0, in the semifinals and Monticello, 10-3, in the quarters.

The Bryant Stars include Logan Allen, Beaux Bonvillian, Drew Brown, Cameron Coleman, Jake East, Jeffery Hastings, Dylan Hurt, D.J. Johnson, Austin Kelly, Hayden Knowles, Preston Kyzer, Garrett Misenheimer, Aaron Orender, Matthew Sandidge and Scott Schmidt. Darren Hurt is the manager. He’s assisted by Rick Brown and Randy Kelly.

Bryant 11, Junior Deputy 1

Hurt fired a three hitter as Bryant rolled to the champioship, striking out four without a walk over four innings.

East and Schmidt each had two hits in the game and all of the Bryant starters reached base at least once.

A six-run second blew the game open. Bryant had established a 3-0 lead in the first when East walked, advanced on a pair of passed balls and scored on a single by Sandidge. After Sandidge stole second, Misenheimer singled to put runners at the corners. Misenheimer stole second and Knowles delivered the second run with a sacrifice fly. With two odwn Schmidt singled in Misenheimer to cap the inning.

Hurt struck out the side in the top of the second and the Bryant Stars went back to work at the plate in the bottom of the inning. Hastings singled up the middle, stole second and took third on a passed ball. He scored on a single by Allen who also stole second. East beat out a bunt for a hit and stole second. With the squeeze play on, Sandidge got the bunt down and Allen scored to make it 5-0.

With two down, Knowles singled in East. Hurt was hit by a pitch and, after both runners moved up on a passed ball, Schmidt scorched a double to left to chase both home. He then came around on a single by Kyzer before Junior Deputy to get out of the jam.

Junior Deputy used a pair of hits and a double steal to get a run in the top of the third but, with a man at third and one out, Bryant pulled a doubleplay on a pop to Knowles at third to end the inning.

In the bottom of the third, East singled with one out and advanced on a passed ball. Sandidge walked and the duo pulled a double steal. Misenheimer was hit by a pitch and a passed ball allowed East to score. Sandidge scored on Knowles’ grounder to short to make it 11-1.

Hurt finished it by pitching around a two-out error in the top of the fourth, ended it with a strikeout.

Bryant 15, Sylvan Hills 0

The Stars scored seven in the first and eight in the second to make quick work of Sylvan Hills.

Orender and Brown combined on a one-hit shutout over the three innings. Orender worked the first two innings, striking out three, walking a pair and allowing the lone hit. Brown walked the first batter of the third then retired the next three to end the game.

Bryant took advantage of nine walks with nine hits including a two-run homer by Knowles.

East led off the game with a single and stole second and third. Allen walked and swiped second then Misenheimer ripped one down the left-field line that bounced over the fence for a ground-rule double that chased both runners home.

Knowles then greeted a new pitcher with his two-run blast to left-center. Hurt walked and Schmidt beat out a bunt for a hit. And when Hastings walked to load the bases, another pitching change occurred. But the new hurler walked Coleman to force in a run and Orender to force in another.

The fourth pitcher of the inning recorded the first out but then walked Allen to bring home the seventh run of the frame.

Knowles was hit by a pitch to start the second-inning onslaught. Hurt reached on an error and Schmidt singled to left to load the bags. Hastings singled in a run then Coleman beat out a bunt for an RBI single. Orender stroked a double down the line in left to plate two and, after East walked, McKinney cracked a two-run double, forcing yet another pitching change.

Misenheimer drew a walk before the first out was finally recorded. Brown drew a walk and Schmidt picked up an RBI with a grounder to the right side to make it 15-0.

Bryant 10, Monticello 3

A five-run second helped Bryant build an insurmountable lead over Monticello which kept alive with two runs in the top of the fourth only to have Bryant add the 10th run in the bottom of the inning to end the game. A single by McKinney, a stolen base and an error set the stage for East’s game-ending double.

Bryant took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With one out, Sandidge doubled and Misenheimer mashed a two-run homer.

Monticello cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the second but Bryant’s uprising in the bottom of the inning proved too much to overcome. Orender’s one-out single started the inning. He stole second and, after East walked, scored on a single by Sandidge. Hits by Misenheimer and Knowles followed. A walk to Knowles, a hit by Schmidt and a free pass to Allen completed the inning.

After Bonvillian, the third Bryant pitcher, eased through a 1-2-3 top of the third, Bryant tacked on two more runs. East drew a lead-off walk and advanced to third on passed balls. With two down, Knowles singled him home. Consecutive walks to Hurt, Schmidt and Allen forced in Knowles to make it 9-1.

Four hits produced two runs for Monticello in the top of the fourth but it was too little, too late as Bryant clinched it in the bottom of the inning.

Bryant begins District Tournament play at Bishop Park this Friday.
