MONTICELLO, Ark. — The Bryant 15-year-old All-Stars of 2010 will begin their bid to win their second Babe Ruth World Series championship in three years when they open play at Monticello’s Burlington Field on Friday, Aug. 20, against Pine Bluff Seabrook at 5:30 p.m.[more]
It was much the same group of players that won a World Series two years ago as 13’s. Ironically, they fell short of qualifying as 14’s despite the fact that the Southwest Regional Tournament was held in Bryant.
To get to the Series, Bryant won its District and State Tournaments. Because the World Series is in Monticello that qualified them. State runner-up White Hall, which has become quite a rival over the years, advanced to the Southwest Regional and won it, earning a spot at the World Series as well.
Bryant edged White Hall in the District finals and the State finals. The two will meet again during pool play at the Series on Saturday at 6 p.m.
The Bryant 15’s include Zach Cambron, Evan Castleberry, Hayden Daniel, Josh Davis, Evan Ethridge, Cody Gogus, Tyler Green, Riley Hall, Blain Jackson, Tyler Nelson, Cameron Price, Daniel Richards, Tryce Schalchlin, Devon Sears and Marcus Wilson. The team is managed by Jimmy Parker with assistance from Tony Ethridge.
In all, there are five Arkansas teams in the field of 12 in the tournament. Along with Bryant and White Hall, host Monticello is joined by two invitational teams, Pine Bluff Seabrook and Hamburg. Trying to stay sharp, Bryant, Monticello and Hamburg have played practice games in the weeks since the end of the State tournament.
After opening pool play against Seabrook and White Hall, Bryant will take on North Syracuse, New York (Middle Atlantic Regional champion) on Sunday at 11:30 a.m., then Greenville, N.C. (Southeast) on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
The tournament also includes Stamford, Conn. (New England); Saginaw Valley, Mich. (Ohio Valley); Waite Park, Minn. (Midwest Plains); Kelso, Wash. (Pacific Northwest); and Torrance, Calif. (Pacific Southwest).
The top three teams in each of the two pools will advance to a single-elimination championship tournament with the No. 1 seeds earning a first-round bye. The tournament begins on Wednesday, Aug. 25. The championship game is set for Friday, Aug. 27, at 5:30 p.m.
