Bryant 7’s reach bracket play as No. 2 seed

MADISONVILLE, La. — The Bryant All-Stars, thanks to solid defense and early run production, dismissed[more] a pair of teams from Louisiana to wrap up pool play at the 2011 Cal Ripken 7-year-old Southwest Regional Tournament on Sunday.

The 10-2 win over Westside, La., and the 7-0 win over Zachary, La., made Bryant the second seed from its pool in bracket play which was set to begin today. The Stars were set for a rematch with Zachary in the first round.

The Bryant 7-year-old team includes Evan Barrrett, Luke Dreher, Caleb Greiner, Drew Hatman, Kason Highfill, Connor Martin, Logan McDonald, Colby Morrow, Cade Parker, Turner Seelinger, Hayden Thompson and Logan White. Manager Jason Greiner is assisted by Ryan Martin and Kevin McDonald.

In the win over Zachary on Sunday, the Bryant defense allowed just one baserunner in four innings. After taking a 1-0 lead in the first, the Stars dented the plate six times in the second to take control of the game.

The opening tally was produced on a lead-off double by McDonald, a single by Dreher and, with two down, an RBI hit by Parker.

In the second, Bryant didn’t get it going until two were out. That’s when Seelinger cracked a double to left. White singled him in then scored when Hatman smacked a two-bagger. Highfill chased in Hatman with a base hit to bring up the top of the batting order.

McDonald singled then Dreher’s base hit made it 5-0. Those two sprinted home on a double by Thompson who was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple to end the inning.

Bryant jumped on Westside too with four in each of the first two innings. In the opening surge, McDonald doubled and stole third. Dreher’s two-base hit brought him home then Thompson cracked a third double to make it 2-0. Barrett singled in the third run then scored the fourth when Greiner beat out an infield hit, taking second when Westside held Barrett at third then Martin singled for the RBI. Martin got to second when Westside held Greiner at third but they were stranded.

The Stars picked it right back up in the second, though. Hatman beat out an infield hit with one down and, though he was forced at second on a grounder to the pitcher, Highfill kept the inning alive by making it to first. He stole second then the torrent began again with a triple by McDonald. Dreher singled to make it 6-0 and, after he stole second, he scored on a base hit by Thompson. He too swiped a base and raced home on Barrett’s single to make it 8-0.

Westside managed a run in the top of the third but Bryant trumped that with two in the bottom of the inning. They loaded the bases on hits by Greiner, Martin and Seelinger. A run scored when White bounced into a force at second then Hatman singled in the final tally.

Neither team scored in the fourth and, when Westside mustered just one run in the fifth, the game was over.
