Bryant Blue shuts out Benton for second win of the season

BENTON — Chase Kincaid kicked a 25-yard field goal, Phillip Isom Green ran 22 yards for a touchdown and the defense[more] made sure that was plenty enough scoring as the Bryant Blue Hornets of Bethel Middle School forged a 10-0 win over the Benton Panthers in an eighth grade battle at C.W. Lewis Stadium.

The Hornets, now 2-1 on the season, hosts Lakewood on Thursday, Sept. 20.

Isom Green rushed for 67 yards on 10 carries and caught a pass from Desmond Duckworth for 21 yards. Duckworth was 5 of 8 throwing for 76 yards. He also picked up 41 yards on the ground in nine tries. Caylin Allen caught a pair of passes for 18 yards. Kincaid and Jeffery Hastings made the other two receptions.

“There was a lot of defense,” noted Bryant Blue head coach Dale Jones. “The defense played outstanding. D.J. Buckner and Collin Welch played lights out on defense.”

The defense forced Benton into a three-and-out on the first series of the game. After a punt, the Hornets drove to the Benton 7, overcoming a holding penalty along the way.

But the drive stalled there with 1:30 left in the first quarter.

“We had a third-and-goal from the 7 and had a penalty,” Jones related. “We threw a slant and the receiver got tackled so we ended up trying a 25-yard field goal and Chase Kincaid kicked it right down the middle. It would’ve been good from 30 or more. He’s been kicking the ball real well this week.

“We called a timeout and talked about it,” he mentioned. “I hadn’t run him out there to try a field goal yet this year. I asked him, ‘How do you feel about it?’ and he said, ‘I feel good about it, coach,’ and he drilled it.”

Benton threatened on the last possession of the half, driving to the Bryant 20. With time running out, the Panthers threw a pair of passes into the end zone only to be broken up by Hornets’ defenders. On the last play of the half, the Hornets sacked the Benton quarterback so the 3-0 score held at the break.

Bryant Blue got the ball to start the second half and in nine plays drove for its touchdown, capped off by Isom Green’s run. Kincaid tacked on the extra points to make it 10-0.

Benton, in turn, drove into Bryant Blue territory but the Hornets held on downs. The Panthers got one last chance after a Hornets’ fumble but, again, the defense held on downs and the offense ran out the clock to seal the victory.

“(Benton) had 50-something kids and we had three guys hurt so we had 29 kids dressed out tonight,” noted the Hornets’ proud coach, “and we went over and beat them.”
