The Bryant Hornets opened up the outdoor track season with a seventh place finish at the[more] Bryant Hornet Relays Thursday night. Bryant scored a total of 41 points to finish behind Conway (118), Russellville (103.5), Cabot (54.5), Lake Hamilton (44.5), LR Central (44), and LR Catholic (43.5). A total of 21 teams scored in the meet.

“We had a lot of personal records set tonight and the guys competed hard,” commented Hornets coach Steve Oury. “We are missing Dillion Winfrey, who is battling an injury, so I thought we did a good job on the sprint relays of getting the baton around the track. Hopefully we can get Dillion back soon.”

Derrick Dogan led the way for the Hornets with a first place finish in the long jump in a new personal best distance of 21′ 4″. Dogan also placed fifth in the 400-meter dash (52.6), along with being part of both the 400-meter relay team with Charles Henson, Lester Lowery, and Caleb Thomas (7th in 44.75), and the 1600-meter relay team with Henson, Thomas, and Lance Smith (6th in 3:35.23).

The 3200-meter relay team of Smith, Clifton Hampton, Austin Middleton, and Tyler Purtle earned a second place finish in a time of 8:41.97. Hampton later earned an eighth place finish in the 3200-meter run in a new personal best time of 10:53.47.

Also scoring for the Hornets were Spencer Sullivan in the 110-meter hurdles (seventh in 16.85) and the 300-meter hurdles (fifth in 43.82), Hunter Schelle in the 300-meter hurdles (fourth in 43.46), Charles Henson in the long jump (eighth in 19′ 7.5″), and Caleb Thomas in the 200-meter dash (eighth in 23.11).

“Derrick Dogan had a great meet, and I thought Lance Smith, Spencer Sullivan, and Clifton Hampton all had breakthrough performances,” Oury commented. “Also, Karon Dismuke is getting better all the time in the shot and the discus, so I think he is close to breaking through and scoring some points in those events.”

The Hornets will be back in action on April 6 at the Cyclone Relays in Russellville.
