Bryant Department makes plans to mark Fire Prevention Week

By Martin Couch

Chief Randy Cox announced that Fire Prevention Week will be Oct. 3-9 in Bryant.[more]

"We are going to visit with kindergarten through third graders at Bryant, Springhill and Collegeville Elementary schools during that week," Cox said. "Thanks to our firefighters, we are going to have a coloring contest again and, for those that win, they get to come practice with the fire fighters at the station and then we take them to school on one of the fire trucks so all their friends can see them."

To end the week, the Bryant Fire Department will also hold a Fire Festival at the Central Station on Roya Lane from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

"We're going to have a lot of activities for the kids and demonstrations from the fire fighters," Cox said. "The fire fighters will also cook hamburgers and hot dogs for the public as a way to say thank you for their support."

Cox also promoted three “probie” fire fighters during the last meeting of the Bryant City Council. John Precock, Jennifer Henson and Randy Harmon were all promoted to fire fighter first class at Bryant.

"These probies or rookies spend 240 hours of EMS training, eight weeks of class at SAU-Tech at the Arkansas Fire Academy and, for one year, they have to conduct duties around the station to prove themselves," Cox said.

Henson was also recognized as the top academic rookie at the Fire Academy and was the first female to ever receive that award.
