Bryant High swimmers wrap up regular season

LITTLE ROCK — Members of the Bryant High School swim team placed in the top 10 in seven events at the 2009 Central Arkansas Season-ending Invitational meet at UALR held Jan. 29-31.

Freshman Jordan Martin turned into the top finish among the BHS swimmers, taking third in the girls 500 meter freestyle with a time of 7:10.58. She garnered 16 points for the Lady Hornets who finished seventh in the 14-team field. Only Mount St. Mary's Rachel Reeves (6:09.31) and Conway's Haley Stoner (6:27.98) topped Martin's effort.

The top performance for the Hornets, meanwhile, was recorded by Jordan Combs in the 200 free. The sophomore picked up a ninth-place finish in a time of 2:12.70. Teammate Jesse Wolf was 16th in 2:33.74.

The Hornets finished ninth as a team among the 14 schools competing.

On Tuesday, Feb. 17, the Bryant swimmers will be competing at the District meet at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia. State is set for the final weekend in February back at UALR.[more]

At the Central Arkansas meet, the Lady Hornets got another fine performance from junior Justine Tazelaar. In the 200 yard individual medley, she was fifth in a time of 2:37.14 with Megan Matthew also finishing in the top 10. Her time of 3:05.31 was good for 10th. Alyx Ramsey also scored for the Lady Hornets in the event, finishing 16th in 3:17.36.

In the 100 free, Tazelaar turned in a clocking of 1:02.44 which was good for a sixth-place finish.

Bryant's girls also picked up individual scoring in the 1-meter diving competition where Katelyn Prewitt, a freshman, took seventh with a score of 77.06. Martin was 14th in the 200 free (2:38.91) and Matthew was 15th in the 100 backstroke (1:23.98).

Megan Matthew contributed to the Bryant point total in the 100 yard backstroke.

In the relays, the Lady Hornets took seventh in the 400 free with Leslie Henry, Charlie Hunnicutt, Matthew and Martin teaming up on

 a 5:33.21. The team of Matthew, Ramsey, Tazelaar and Martin finished eighth in the 200 medley in a time of 2:27.70 with the quartet of Kayla Red, Hunnicutt, Ramsey and Tazelaar turning in a 2:17.71 to take eighth in the 200 free.

For the boys, Combs added a 10th in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:33.57. Teammate Andrew Dull was close behind, taking 12th in 2:40.02.

Wolf's 1:19.36 in the 100 butterfly garnered a 12th-place finish with Aaron Kizer 16th in 1:31.94. Brennan Bullock was 12th in the 50 free, finishing in 26.15. In the 100 free, Dylan Machycek grabbed points for his 13th-place finish with a time of 1:03.31.

The boys picked up two eighth's and a 10th in the relays. In the 200 free, Caleb Thomas, Machycek, Blake Heil and Bullock combined on a time of 1:50.33 to take eighth. In the 400, Wolf, Dull, Kyle Douglas and Combs turned in a 4:40.79 for the other eighth-place finish. The 10th place finish also added to the point total with Bullock, Heil, Combs and Machycek producing a 2:10.18 clocking.
