CABOT — When the offense of the Bryant White Hornets of Bryant Middle School had to have it, they ran[more] De’Amonte Terry behind the right side of the line, right behind guard Chandler Davis and tackle Will Roberts.
With 4:16 left in the team’s game against the Cabot South Panthers eighth grade squad, Landon Smith made an interception at the 3-yard line to turn back what might’ve been a go-ahead scoring drive for the Panthers. He returned it to the 15 and the Hornets went on offense, needing to milk the clock to limit the time Cabot South might have for a last-ditch effort at overcoming the deficit.
But the Hornets not only ate time, they ran out the clock completely to clinch a 14-8 victory.
Terry, whose 38-yard touchdown run put the Hornets ahead with 1:09 left in the third quarter, started that final march with an 8-yard run. But a procedure penalty on second down put the Hornets in a bind. On a third-and-4 from its own 21, head coach Brad Smothermon showed some confidence in his quarterback and Beaux Bonvillain came through with a clutch 10-yard completion to Jesse Smith.
With Cabot South using its timeouts, Bryant White faced a third-and-6 at its 35 when Terry broke through off the blocks of Davis and Roberts with a lead from Hayden Knowles, picking up 8 yards and a first down with 1:32 left. He then put the finishing touches on the victory with a 15-yard bolt.
Bonvillain wound up 6 of 12 passing for 68 yards with a pair of interceptions and a touchdown. Austin Kelly caught the TD pass from 9 yards out.
In typical Cabot fashion, the Panthers, in the dead T formation, pounded 60 yards in eight plays on the opening drive of the game. It still took a fourth-down run by quarterback Justin Burton to get the points as he narrowly crossed the goal line from a yard out.
A run by Connor Dagle around right end added the two-point conversion.
Bryant countered with a scoring drive of its own despite penalties on its first two snaps. The Hornets wound up going 74 yards in 13 plays with Bonvillain completing 5 of 6 passes along the way.
The Hornets converted three third-down situations. The first was a third-and-13 (after those penalties). Bonvillain’s first pass of the game was caught by Jesse Smith for 14 yards. Moments later, the Hornets faced a third-and-4 at the 47 and Terry slashed for 10 yards. At the Panthers’ 31, the Hornets came up to another third-and-4. This time, Bonvillain found Jesse Smith for 9 yards.
From the 22, Austin Despain rushed for 4 yards then Bonvillain tossed a 9-yard completion to Knowles. From the 9, Terry was stopped cold but, on second down, Bonvillain found Kelly for the points.
A try for a tying two-point conversion fell incomplete.
The defense forced Cabot South to turn the ball over on downs before the half was over. On first down, Kelly forced a fumble that the Panthers were able to cover after a loss of 3. On second down, Kelly and Nathan Mays stopped quarterback Gerard Barnes for no gain. Barnes ran for 7 yards on third down but, on fourth-and-6, Barnes’ deep pass was knocked down by Landon Smith and the Hornets took over with :32 left in the half.
Bryant White’s long pass on the final play of the half was intercepted.
The Panthers got the ball to start the second half and appeared to be on their way to a second score. Dagle broke a 22 yard run to the Bryant 25 with Jassim Lee making a touchdown-saving tackle. Linebacker Cameron Coleman made big stops on second down and fourth down and the Bryant defense forced Cabot South to turn the ball over on downs at the 18.
Bryant drove out to the 41 keyed by a 17-yard pass from Bonvillain to Garrett Misenheimer. But the penalty sidetracked the march and a third-down pass was intercepted by Cabot’s Jeremy Marshall.
On the next play, however, Bryant White got the ball back as Marshall fumbled and Bryant’s Madre Dixon recovered at the Cabot South 38.
Terry set sail on the first down play from there to give the Hornets the lead. Bonvillain threw to Knowles for a two-point conversion.
Cabot began the subsequent drive at its 21. On first down, Barnes broke a 21-yard run. The Panthers reached the 24 where, on a fourth-and-1, Dagle got the first down by inches to keep the drive alive.
Two plays later, they had a first-and-10 at the Bryant 13. Trying to catch the Hornets by surprise, the Panthers attempted just their second pass of the game only to have Landon Smith step in front of the receiver for the interception.
Now 2-1 on the season, Bryant White returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 27, at Conway White.
