Bryant’s freshman girls tripped up by Watson Chapel

PINE BLUFF — The Watson Chapel Lady Wildcats freshman team put together a 14-2 run in the second quarter to spark a 38-22 win that spoiled the season debut for the Bryant Lady Hornets freshman on Thursday.

Chapel led just 9-8 after the first quarter but the second-quarter blitz produced a 23-10 lead at the half. It was 29-14 by the end of the third quarter.

“We started off well but had a bad second quarter that we could not recover from,” acknowledged Bryant coach Nathan Castaldi. “You could tell it was our first game because we had lots of little mistakes. It was a good learning experience for our girls. It gives us things to work on from here on out. I was proud of how hard our girls played and how they continued to fight throughout the game.”

Kelly Williams led the Lady Hornets with 6 points. Raven Loveless added 5 and Paige Adams 4. Maddie Miller, Baylee Rowton and Jalen Sparks finished with 2 apiece. Sydney Cooper hit a free throw.

On Monday, the Lady Hornets return to action in the first round of the annual Bryant Invitational Tournament. They’ll face Hot Springs at 5:35 in the Bryant High School gym.
