Burton, Perryman lead Hornet freshman in first meet

BENTON — John Burton and Sam Perryman each won two individual events and the Bryant Hornets freshmen won two relays on the way to a second-place finish at the Benton Junior High Invitational track meet on Monday, March 7.

The Hornets finished with 118.5 points, second only to Lake Hamilton’s 131. Benton was third with 103 and Arkadelphia fourth with 90 in the 15-team competition.

Burton won both weight events. His discus toss of 135 was the best in that event. In the shot put, his winning heave went 47 feet. Teammates Jakob Neel and Blaine Smith also scored in the shot. Neel was fifth at 39 feet. Smith was eighth at 38’7.5”.

Perryman won both hurdles events. In the 110-meter hurdles, he turned in a 17.90. In the 300, his 45.02 paced the field with Bryant’s Nick Fowler seventh in 48.67.

Perryman was also fourth in the pole vault, clearing 9’6”.

Andrew Hayes contributed an individual first by covering 38’6.5” in the triple jump. Malek Holman added seventh-place points for the Hornets, covering 34’8”.

Hayes was also just barely second in the 400-meter dash. His 57.10 was right on the heels of Benton’s Cade Clark, who won in 57.01.

Hayes joined Josh Robinson, Randy Thomas and Hunter Ulmer in the winning effort in the 4×400 relay. The quartet turned in a 3:53.79 to edge Lake Hamilton’s 3:53.93.

Bryant’s group of Jake Dreher, Chris Morgan, Joshua Nelson and Isaac Silos combined on a 9:20.62 to win the 4×800 relay. Lake Hamilton was second in 9:21.02.

The Hornets were second in the 4×100 relay with Sebastian Dunn teaming up with Hayes, Robinson and Thomas on a 46.67. Arkadelphia won in 46.46.

Robinson picked up second-place points in the long jump, leaping 18’2.75”, just short of the winning distance of 19’ by Fountain Lake’s Ahman Johnson.

Morgan scored a fourth in the 800 at 2:19.51 while Thomas turned in an 11.96 in the 100 to take sixth. In the high jump, Thomas and Robinson tied for seventh by clearing 5’4”.

Bryant is scheduled to host the annual Hornets Junior Relays on Monday, March 14.
