Cabot holds on for 2-1 win in Bryant’s third game in four days

CABOT — On the heels of two emotion-charged matches that went to PK’s in three previous[more] days, the Bryant Lady Hornets soccer team was challenged by a fired-up Cabot Lady Panthers team on Friday night. And the wear and tear of playing their third game in four days took its toll on the Lady Hornets. Despite Bryant’s valiant second-half effort, Cabot held on for a 2-1 win.

The Lady Hornets, now 16-5 overall and 10-3 in the 7A/6A-Central Conference, finish the regular season and their league slate on Monday at home against North Little Rock. Bryant will be the No. 2 seed from the Central to the Class 7A State Tournament in Fort Smith. The Lady Hornets will open play on Friday, May 11, at noon, probably against Fayetteville or Rogers Heritage.

Cabot, fighting to gain the No. 3 seed to State and celebrating Senior Night, stayed a game ahead of Mount St. Mary in the standings with a final league contest at Van Buren on Monday.

The Lady Panthers built a 2-0 lead in the first half and held that until, with about 10 minutes left to play, Bryant’s Rori Whittaker drilled a goal to make it 2-1.

“We couldn’t quite get another in,” said Lady Hornets head coach Julie Long. “However, we created lots of opportunities.
“It was a hard-fought game,” she noted. “We had a few things not go our way and had to fight through some tired minds and bodies.

“But I believe this game helped us,” the coach stated. “Cabot came out fighting and helped us see we constantly have to push ourselves to be better. It was a good learning experience and I think it will help the girls on down the road. Now all that’s left is a wrap-up on one great conference season.”
