Cubs assign Wells to 10-day camp in Arizona starting this weekend

Thanks to a change in the plans of the Chicago Cubs, Ben Wells will start what his dad, Doug, called his “dream adventure” a little sooner than expected.

The young right-hander was notified by the Cubs that they will be flying him to Mesa, Ariz., for 10 days of strength and conditioning work.[more]

At the end of that stint, Doug Wells said, the Cubs will fly Ben to Chicago from Arizona while they fly Doug and Ben’s older brother Justin into Chicago from Little Rock. There, the team will introduce their seventh-round draft pick to the media and treat the trio to tickets for the Labor Day weekend series between the Cubs and the New York Mets.

“Then the three of us will be flown back to Little Rock,” Doug Wells said. “Then, on Sept. 14, they’ll fly Ben back to Arizona for five weeks in the Instructional League.”

Once that stint concludes, Ben Wells, who led the Bryant Hornets to a Class 7A State championship this spring finishing with a perfect game in the title contest, will be off for the winter. He’ll report to spring training with the Boise Hawks, the Cubs Class A affiliate in the Northern League.
