Debut for Bryant Blue eighth grade a success; seventh grade team tripped up

Calvin and Caylin Allen combined for 25 points and Desmond Duckworth added 11 as the[more] Bryant Blue Hornets eighth grade team of Bethel Middle School opened the 2012-13 season with a 49-43 win over the E Stem Charter School Mets of Little Rock Thursday night.

In a seventh grade game, E Stem prevailed 27-21.

Bryant Blue opened up a 13-4 lead in the first quarter of the eighth grade game only to have the Mets surge to a 25-22 halftime advantage. But the Hornets opened the third quarter the way they’d opened the game, roaring to a 38-29 lead going into the fourth period.

Calvin Allen finished with 14. Caylin Allen matched Duckworth’s 11. Josh Bonner and Phillip Isom-Green pitched in with 4 each. Jeffery Hastings and Hunter Handley added 2 apiece and Derrick Blake knocked down a free throw.

In the seventh grade game, Bryant Blue led throughout the first half. It was 7-5 at the first break and 12-10 after two quarters. Going into the fourth, however, the game was deadlocked at 15.

Diante Woodson led the Hornets with 6 points. Matthew Sandidge and Jace Houston contributed 5 each with Sam Chumley finishing with 4 and Malcom Moody 1.

The Bethel eighth grade team is set to begin play in a tournament at the Anthony School in Little Rock on Monday. The seventh grade team doesn’t play again until Nov. 27, at home against Lake Hamilton with both A and B games.
