Fourth-quarter eruption lifts Blue Hornets to season-opening win

MORRILTON — Jason Hastings and John Winn combined for 29 points as the Bryant Blue Hornets eighth grade team of Bethel Middle School opened the 2010-11 season with a 34-27 win over the Morrilton Devil Pups eighth grade team on Monday, Nov. 8.

Hastings finished with 15 points, Winn 14 and Brandon Warner added 5.

The team includes Jake Acord, Austin Green, Ryan Hall, Jason Hastings, Brushawn Hunger, Andrew Kincaid, Blaine Knight, Brian Tackett, Paul Tierney, Brandon Warner, John Winn, Mark Winn, Dylan Wolf and Brendan Young.[more]

The game was tied 4-4 after a quarter but the Hornets surged in the second period to take a 16-8 halftime lead. While holding Bryant Blue scoreless in the third qurter, Morrilton rallied to tie it 16-16. But the Hornets finished with a fourth-quarter outburst that more than doubled their score.

“We had a strong fourth quarter as far as scoring went,” commented head coach Derek McGrew. “We have had only five practices and it showed. We were out of sync offensively. Defensively, we played okay. I’m proud to get the win.

The Hornets return to action on Thursday, Nov. 11, at Hot Springs Lakeside.
