The Bryant Lady Hornets freshman team surged to an 11-2 lead in the first quarter on their way to their first victory of the season, a 37-17 victory over the Conway White Lady Wampus Cats in the consolation round of the Bryant Invitational Tournament on Tuesday.

The Lady Hornets, now 1-2, will return to action on Thursday at 7:10 p.m., against Pulaski Academy to finish up the tourney.

“In the last two games, we got off to slow starts and never really recovered,” noted Bryant coach Nathan Castaldi, whose team fell behind 23-10 in the first half of their opener at Watson Chapel then trailed Hot Springs 15-2 at the end of the first quarter on Monday. “Last night, we got off to a quick start and were able to keep stretching the lead.

“I thought the girls did a really good job of executing both on the offensive and defensive end. On offense, we were able to move the ball to get the shots that we wanted while, on defense, we limited the number of good shots they got.”

Raven Loveless led the Lady Hornets with 10 points. Paige Adams and Kelly Williams added 6 each with Danielle Singleton scoring 5 and Jalen Sparks 4. Stephanie Cullen, Baylee Rowton and Katie Evans pitched in with 2 apiece.

Bryant led 19-12 at the half, 27-15 by the end of the third quarter.

“We still need to do a better job of rebounding but, overall, I thought we played very well,” Castaldi said. “I challenged the girls at halftime not to be content with a 7-point lead. I wanted them to continue to stretch the lead out and we were able to do that at the end of the third quarter and final.”
