Freshman Hornets third in final tune-up before conference meet

PEARCY — Bryant freshman Charlie Terry edged out Lake Hamilton rival Hunter Usdrowski in[more] the 800 meter run by less than two seconds in one of the highlight duels of the Lake Hamilton Junior High Invitational track meet on Thursday.

The Hornets also engaged in close finishes in a pair of relays as they finished third in the team standings at the meet, their final tune-up before hosting the Central Arkansas Junior High Conference championships on Thursday, April 18.

De Queen won the team title with 194 points. Lake Hamilton was second with 169. Bryant finished third with 112.5. Lakeside was a distant fourth with 53.5 points in the eight-team meet, which was rescheduled after being rained out last week.

Terry’s was the lone first-place finish for Bryant. He clocked in at 2:11.71 with Usdrowski on his heels at 2:13.58. The Lake Hamilton runner won the 1600 meters with Bryant’s Ben Majors finishing second in 5:09.78.

In the 800, Travis Cumming finished sixth in 2:29.18. In the 1600, the Hornets picked up additional points from Ian Britt, who was sixth in 5:26.20, and Eric Stewart, who was eighth in 5:27.96.

In the 4×100 relay, it was nearly a photo finish as Lake Hamilton broke the tape in 47.21 with Bryant crossing at 47.41. Drew Alpe, Simeon Watson Khaliq Slater and Taylor Hecker combined for the Hornets.

The 4×400, though not that close, was still a thriller with De Queen winning in 3:56.14 and Bryant finishing second in 3:58.87. The Hornet quartet was Clayton Harvey, Wyatt Heavin, Hecker and Sam Martin.

In the 4×800, Bryant team of Peyton Reber, Chandler Reep, Josh Yenner and Joey Colvert turned in a 9:55.6 to finish third.

In individual events, the Hornets had three runners score points in both hurdles races and the 400 meter run. Dylan Davis led the hurdlers with a second-place in the 110 hurdles (19.09) and a fifth in the 300 (49.33). Drew Carnahan was fourth in the 110 (19.71). He was seventh in the 300 in 50.78. Blake Carnahan was sixth in both races. In the 110, he finished in 20.07. In the 300, he clocked in at 50.61.

Hecker led the trio of scoring runners in the 400, finishing third in 56.74. Martin was seventh (1:00.67) and Zane Pitman eighth (1:01.70). Hecker was also fifth in the 100 with a time of 12.19. Slater was sixth in 12.65.

Alpe finished fifth (25.82) and Watson seventh (26.16) in the 200.

The field events were highlighted by Kameron Guillory’s fourth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 17’9”. Watson was seventh at 16’3”. Davis added a sixth in the pole vault, clearing 7’9”.

In the throws, Danny Murillo was sixth with a discus throw of 108’4” and seven in the shot with a put of 41’1.25”. Ronnie Beard was sixth in the shot at 41’5.5” and Justin Karp was eighth in the discus (106’6”).
