Hood, Lewis in top five after first day of Pentathlon

CABOT — Bryant’s Haley Hood was fourth and Jadyn Lewis fifth after the first day of the 2016 Arkansas High School Heptathlon on Wednesday. Bree Hood, Haley Hood’s younger sister, was 45th.

After the first day of the 2016 Arkansas High School Decathlon, Bryant’s Landon Abernathy was 27th and teammate Matthew Bagby was 29th.

Day two, with three events in the Pentathlon and five more in the Decathlon will be held on Thursday.

In the first four events of the Pentathlon, Little Rock Parkview’s Jada Baylark was first with 2,658 points followed by Asia Anderson of Pulaski Robinson with 2,546. Clinton’s Allie Hensley was third at 2,289 followed closely by Haley Hood with 2,263 points and Lewis with 2,156.

Baylark had the fastest times in the 100-meter low hurdles (15.06) and the 200-meter dash (24.91). Anderson turned in the best long jump at 18’6 ¾”, while Eden Crow of Genoa Central had the best distance in the fourth event, the discus, at 112’0”.

Haley Hood ran a 16.35 in the hurdles and a 27.05 in the 200. Her long jump went 16’11 ½”. She threw the discus 65’6 1/3”.

Lewis turned in a 17.96 clocking in the hurdles and ran the second best 200 with a time of 26.00. She leapt 17’5 ¾” in the long jump and threw the discus 54’0 ¾”.

Bree Hood finished with 1,481 points turning in a 19.59 clocking in the hurdles and a 30.22 in the 200. Her long jump was measured at 15’5” and her discus toss went 50’10 ¾”.

On Thursday, the events are the high jump, the shot put and the 800-meter run.

In the Pentathlon, Mark Odom of Cabot led with 3,343 points including the best time in the 100-meter dash. Trevean Caldwell of Crossett was second with 3,308 points including the best time in the 400 at 50.27.

Genoa Central’s Hayden Hampton had the top distance in the shot put at 43’9 ½” and was third overall with 3,299 points. Christopher Johnson’s 22’2 ¼” in the long jump was best of the day and helped him accrue 3,295 points to place fourth overall.

Brandon Shaw of Rogers Heritage was fifth with 3,256 points.

In the fifth event, the high jump, Rogers’ Tony Roller and Gosnell’s Marquel McKinney each cleared 6’4 ¾” for the best effort of the day. Both were in the top 10.

Abernathy had accumulated 2,631 points going into day two. He ran 11.99 in the 100 and 54.96 in the 400. His long jump was measured at 18’3 ¼” while his shot put went 33’2 ½”. In the high jump, he cleared 4’11”.

Bagby turned in a time of 11.95 in the 100 and a 52.16 in the 400. He too cleared 4’11” in the high jump while his long jump covered 16’3”. In the shot, he threw 32’7 ¾”.

On day two, the five events are the 110-meter high hurdles, the discus, the pole vault, the triple jump and the 1,500-meter run.
