Hornet harriers continue to improve as conference meet approaches

CONWAY — The Bryant Hornets rode the strong hurdling performance of Spencer Sullivan to a[more] fourth-place finish at the Wampus Cat Relays on Thursday night. Sullivan placed second in the 300 meter hurdles in a new personal record time of 40.99, and also earned a sixth place finish in the 110 meter high hurdles in a time of 16.61.

The Hornets scored a total of 61 points in the meet to finish behind Conway (164), North Little Rock (75), and Cabot (64). A total of 14 teams scored in the meet.

“Sullivan is creeping up on the school record in the 300 hurdles, so hopefully he can keep progressing. He is doing a great job,” said Hornets coach Steve Oury.

"We had a very nice meet,” he continued. “Personal records were set by several athletes, including Sullivan in the 300 hurdles, Tyler Purtle in the 1600, Clifton Hampton in the 3200, Austin Middleton in the 800 (2:10), and Travis Royal in the triple jump.”

Purtle’s time was 4:38.89 in the 1600, good for eighth place. Hampton’s 10:39.79 in the 3200 was good for fifth. Royal’s triple jump of 39’ 5.5” also garnered fifth place points.

In addition:

Dillion Winfrey finished fifth in the 100 meter dash (11.58) and fourth in the 200 meter dash (23.13);

Caleb Thomas was fourth in the 100 meter dash (11.57);

Derrick Dogan took fifth in the 400 meter dash (52.31) and fourth in the long jump (20’ 6.5”);

Karon Dismuke was fifth in the shot (42’ 10”) and eighth in the discus (124’ 4”).

In the relays, the team of Dogan, Charles Henson, Royal and Thomas turned in a 44.18 in the 4×100 to place fourth while Royal Dogan, Lance Smith and Henson clocked in at 3:37.92 to finish fifth in the 4×400.

“Dillion Winfrey looked stronger in his second meet back from injury,” Oury noted. “We are hoping he will back close to full strength at the conference meet on April 26."

The conference meet is scheduled to be held at Scott Field in Little Rock.
