Hornets’ first week of spring football practice to be in shorts and helmets

Spring football practice officially starts today and, over the next three weeks, Arkansas high school[more] football teams will be able to practice in pads for 10 days.

The Bryant Hornets will be working in shorts and helmets this week, according to head coach Paul Calley but it probably won’t be the business as usual this spring.

“We’re really behind,” Calley said. “But that’s okay. We’ve got time to get there during the fall and through the summer.

“Really, at this point, I can’t tell a definite plan of what we’re going to do,” he added. “Coach (Lance) Parker (the team’s new offensive coordinator) will be here the 14th and 15th and we’re going to do a lot of teaching those two days. Probably on the 16th and 17th, we may hit a little bit more.

“We’re short coaches,” Calley noted. “We’ll run the first week like a team camp with two offenses, one on each hash, and one defense that flip-flops and after so many plays, another group comes in.”

The Hornets are scheduled to compete in the Joe T. Robinson 7 on 7 in Little Rock on June 7 and the Shootout of the South at Pulaski Academy on June 15-16. Dead days are June 18 through July 1 then a varsity team camp will be held Tuesday, July 10, and Tuesday, July 17, from 8:30 to 10 a.m.

Fall practice begins July 30 with the first day in pads, Aug. 2. The Hornets will scrimmage Little Rock Hall on Aug. 21, at home, starting at 6 p.m. The season opens on Friday, Aug. 31, when the Hornets host Conway.
