Junior girls third in initial meet of the season

The Bryant Junior Lady Hornets took third place in the team competition Saturday at the Minuteman Invitational at Western Hills Park, but they were only nine points away from first. Little Rock Christian won the meet with 58 points, followed by Beebe with 61 points. Bryant scored 67 points followed by Cabot (75), Vilonia (85), Sheridan (162) and Pulaski Academy (204). There were 10 teams and 108 total runners in the race.

The Junior Lady Hornets were led by eighth-grader Mary Catherine Selig who finished fourth with a time of 13:45. Freshman Lauren Hart also had a top 10 finish by taking ninth in a time of 14:28.

Eighth-grader Bailey Brazil also received one of the top 20 medals with her 19th place finish in 15:02. Finishing out the scorers for Bryant were freshman Flora Noble (21st, 15:05) and seventh-grader Mika Johnson (25th, 15:28).

Freshmen Kaylin Watts (26th, 15:29) and Alyssa Rowland (28th, 15:30) finished out the top seven for Bryant.

“I thought our girls ran strong today,” said Bryant coach Danny Westbrook. “We are going to continue to get better as the season goes along. We just need to reduce our time gaps between runners and we can definitely contend for meet championships.

“I was especially proud of Mary Catherine Seling and Lauren Hart,” he added. “They really gave outstanding performances today.”

The team is set to compete again at the Wampus Cat Relays in Conway on Saturday, Sept. 20.
