Lake Hamilton frosh hold off Bryant for team honors at Lakeside

HOT SPRINGS — Andrew Hayes and John Burton accounted for first-place finishes for the Bryant Hornets’ freshman team at the Lakeside Rams Junior Relays Tuesday. And the Hornets finished second in six events but, in five of them, they were second to Lake Hamilton athletes.

The Wolves’ freshmen thus edged the Hornets for top team honors at the meet. Lake Hamilton finished with 139 points to the Hornets’ 125. Nashville was third in the 11-team meet with 93 points with Benton fourth (75) and Arkadelphia fifth (56.5).

Hayes won the triple jump at 37’10”, topping Arkadelphia’s Cannon Turner who covered 35’10”). Bryant’s Malek Holman was seventh at 33’11”.

Burton won the shot put with a heave of 46’9.5”, edging Nashville’s Darren May at 46’3.5”). Michael Chatman finished seventh for the Hornets at 41’9.25”.

Otherwise, Bryant’s frustration with the rival Wolves was exemplified by sprinter Randy Thomas, as he dueled the Wolves’ Latrell Young. In the 100, Young won in 11.45 with Thomas second in 11.77. In the 200, Thomas ran a 23.87, finishing on the heels of Young at 23.63. Bryant’s Josh Robinson was third in 24.38.

Thomas and Young were also matched up as the third legs for their respective relay teams in the 4×400 at the end of the meet. Young and his teammates Haze Farmer, Jackson Galster and Colby Swecker broke the tape at 3:44.89 while Thomas, Hayes, Robinson and Hunter Ulmer finished in 3:46.99.

In the 4×100, Hayes, Holman, Robinson and Thomas clocked in at 46.56, on the heels of Galster, Farmer, Young and Michael Harris at 46.20.

The Hornets’ Chris Barrientos 4:56.17 in the 1600, which was second only to Swecker’s 4:37.87. Matthew O’Gary was eighth for the Hornets at 5:30.02.

Bryant picked up second-place points from Burton in the discus. His throw was 130’11”, just short of the winning distance of Nashville’s Savion Coburn at 138’8”). Chatman’s 113’8” was good for seventh.

Thomas added a third-place finish ion the high jump, clearing 5’6” with Robinson eighth at 4’0”.

Four fourth-place finishes helped the Hornets. Hayes was fourth in the long jump (17’10.5”) and the 400 (56.90). Sam Perryman was fourth in the 300 hurdles at 45.06 and Barrientos was fourth in the 800 (2:18.09).

Perryman added fifth-place points in the pole vault when he cleared 9’6” and in the 110 hurdles with a time of 18.43.

The Hornets’ quartet of Chris Morgan, Joshua Nelson, Ben Sellers and Isaac Silos also finished fifth with a time of 9:47.33 in the 4×800 relay.

The Bryant freshmen are scheduled to compete next on Tuesday, April 5, at Sheridan.
