Murdock eighth, Ward 11th after first day of Heptathlon

HOT SPRINGS — In their first try at the State Heptathlon, Bryant sophomores Melinda Murdock and Leah Ward finished[more] the first day in the top quarter of the field of 44 athletes.

Murdock was eighth with a total of 2,065 points; Ward 11th with 2,030. Springdale Har-Ber’s Payton Stumbaugh set the pace on the first day with 2,611 points.

The first day’s events including the 100 low hurdles, the long jump, the discus and the 200 meter run. Today, the athletes were set to complete the competition with the high jump, shot put and 800.

Ward actually turned the top long jump of the day, covering 17’ 10 ¼”. She ran an 27.1 in the 200, clocked in at 18.74 in the hurdles and threw the discus 56’ 5 ¼”.

Murdock ran one of the top times in the hurdles at 16.31 and turned in a 27.5 in the 200. In the long jump, she cleared 15’ 7 ¾” while throwing the discus 54’ 10 ¼”.
