Wells picks up third professional win

BOISE, Idaho — Right-hander Ben Wells of Bryant threw five strong innings allowing one unearned run on[more] five hits to improve to 3-2 on the season in the Boise Hawks’ 3-2 win over the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes on Wednesday night.

The game, at Boise’s Memorial Stadium, drew a crowd of 3,065.

Wells walked no one and induced 10 ground-ball outs. He allowed a game-opening single but then picked the batter off first and retired the next seven in a row. Salem-Keizer’s second hit was erased when the base-runner was thrown out trying to steal to end the third.

The Volcanoes were shut out on one hit in the fourth before scratching out their run in the fifth on a double and a single that was misplayed in the outfield. With the tying run on second, Wells retired the next two batters to leave him stranded as he protected the Hawks’ 2-1 lead.

Boise is the Class A short-season affiliate of the Chicago Cubs in the Northwest League. Salem-Keizer is a farm team of the San Francisco Giants.
