Whirlwinds hold off Hornets for freshman win

RUSSELLVILLE — Coming off a 32-7 victory over Little Rock Catholic at home and several good practices, the Bryant Hornets freshman team appeared to be primed to go on a winning streak. But they ran into a tough Russellville Whirlwinds team on Monday night and absorbed a 51-35 setback.

The Hornets, now 5-5 overall and 2-4 in the Central Arkansas Junior High Conferrence play at Cabot South this Thursday to wrap up their pre-Christmas schedule.

Russellville’s lead was just 7-6 after a quarter but grew to 22-14 by halftime. It was 38-20 going into the fourth quarter.

For the Hornets, Ryan Riggs led the way with 9 points. Jalen Montgomery, Austin Ledbetter and Braden Godwin each had 4.

“We went into the game really confident,” said Hornets coach Tyler Posey. “We really struggled to get anything going and they played a really good game and hit shots.

“Defensively, we just didn’t play as aggressive as we like and a big credit to them for really executing and knocking down shots.”
