Wood has two hits, gives up two in 3-0 loss to Indianapolis

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bryant’s Travis Wood made his second start for the Louisville Bats of the Class AAA International League on Wednesday night and, despite another solid performance, absorbed his second loss.

Wood, who was in contention for the fifth starter spot with the Cincinnati Reds until the last few days of spring training, had as many hits at the plate himself as he surrendered to the Indianapolis Indians. But Indianapolis managed to score two runs in Wood’s 6 2/3 innings of work on the way to a 3-0 victory.[more]

The Bats were shut out on four hits, two of which came off Wood’s bat, a single to lead off the third and a double with two out and nobody on in the fifth. Wood was erased in a doubleplay in the third then stranded in the fifth.

The lefty retired six of seven over the first two innings, working around a two-out double in the first. In the third, he issued a lead-off walk to Argenis Diaz. Indians pitcher Brad Lincoln sacrificed Diaz to second then Jose Tabata singled him in to make it 1-0.Tabata stole second and third but Wood got the next batter Steve Pearce to tap back to the mound.

Wood then set down 12 in a row and 14 of the last 15 batters he faced with the help of a doubleplay that erased a lead-off walk in the fifth.

The game was still 1-0 going into the seventh. Wood issued a one-out walk then got the second out before giving way to reliever Enerio Del Rosario who proceeded to give up back-to-back singles as Indianapolis made it 2-0.

Along with surrendering two earned runs on two hits, Wood walked three and struck out five during his stint. Though 0-2, his earned run average in his two games is just 2.53.

Wood figures to pitch again either Monday, April 19, against Columbus (Yankees) or Tuesday, April 20, against Toledo.
