Wood surrenders three homers in 4-1 loss to Toledo

LOUISVILLE — Bryant's Travis Wood absorbed his third loss of the season as a starter for the Louisville Bats, the Cincinnati Reds' AAA affiliate in the International League. The Toledo Mud Hens smacked three home runs on the way to a 4-1 win over the Bats on Tuesday night.[more]

Wood, who went to the final cut in a run for the fifth starter spot in the Reds' rotation, is now 0-3 but has received only 5 runs of support from his teammates in those three games. The Bats were shut out in his last start.

The lefty worked deeper in Tuesday's game than he had in the previous starts. He pitched into the eighth, surrendered four earned runs on nine hits with three walks and six strikeouts, throwing 103 pitches. His ERA jumped up to 3.50.

Casper Wells cracked two of the homers against Wood. His solo shot in the second gave Toledo a 1-0 lead. It was the first hit Wood allowed. He didn't allow another one until the fourth when, with two out, he issued a walk to Jeff Larish ahead of Wells. Trying pick Larish off, his throw got past first baseman Drew Sutton. Moments later, Wells homered again. Jeff Frazier followed with a solo shot to make it 4-0.

The Hens were unable to score the rest of the way. Wood got a strikeout to start the eighth, reaching his pitch limit, then gave way to reliever Federico Baez.

The Bats were unable to get on the board until the bottom of the eighth as they were shut down by former Major Leaguer Armando Galarraga.
