Harry Butzlaff of Bryant was given a Mayoral Citation on May 26 at the regularly scheduled May[more] City Council meeting, for his contributions and sacrifices made in World War II.

During the time that he served, Butzlaff was awarded two Presidential Unit Citations for strategic missions his unit executed during the war. Aldermen Rob Roedel and Steve Gladden presented him with this award. Following the award, the Bryant High School “Honeybees,” sang a song in honor of Butzlaff’s accomplishments.

Fire Chief Randy Cox continued the meeting by presenting firefighter Michael Mullins with a new red helmet for being promoted to Lieutenant. Mullins was chosen by the department for the position after two months of vigorous testing.

Police Chief Mark Kizer reported on his “Officer of the Month” program implemented within the police department of Bryant. Each month, an officer will be selected for their outstanding efforts and achievement and then their name will be placed on a plaque after they are recognized at a City Council meeting.

The city’s finances are right on track for 2011, according to Finance Director, Gary Hollis. The general sales tax is two percent higher this month than it was last year at this time.

James Ballew, Bryant Family Festival director, concluded the meeting by updating the council on the planning progress that has been made on the festival. “This year should be the best year,” Ballew said.

The festival will be July 2-4 at Bishop Park and will include a barbecue competition, a BMX bike show (for the first time), 13 live concerts, a fishing derby, three-on-three basketball and much more.

“The goal is to hit every different market,” Ballew said after listing attractions.
