Bryant 12’s (57/70) edged by Tri-County, Texas in extra innings

EAGLE PASS, Texas — A bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the seventh drove in[more] the winning run as Tri-County, Texas slipped past the Bryant All-Stars in a heartbreaker at the Cal Ripken 12-year-old (57/70) Southwest Regional Tournament on Saturday.

Bryant was set to return to action today at 3:30 p.m., in the loser’s bracket, hoping to advance to another game tonight at 8:30 and on to the loser’s bracket finals on Monday at 5 for a chance to play in the championship round.

For the 50/70 12’s, members include Logan Allen, Beaux Bonvillian, Drew Brown, Cameron Coleman, Jake East, Jeffery Hastings, Dylan Hurt, D.J. McKinney, Austin Kelly, Hayden Knowles, Preston Kyzer, Garrett Misenheimer, Aaron Orender, Matthew Sandidge and Scott Schmidt. Manager Darren Hurt is assisted by Rick Brown and Randy Kelly.

Bryant took a quick 3-0 lead in the opening inning but couldn’t break through for more along the way. Tri-County pushed a run across in the second then two more in the third to tie it then both teams escaped from one jam then another before the fateful seventh.

In the first, Allen drew a one-out walk and stole second. Misenheimer was issued an intentional pass but Knowles made Tri-County pay by blasting a three-run homer to center.

In turn, Dylan Hurt, the Bryant starter, struck out the side in the bottom of the inning. In the second, however, he ran into some control trouble issuing a pair of one-out walks. After a wild pitch put runners at second and third, a squeeze play got the Texas team’s first run home.

Bryant threatened to add on in the third when Allen walked and took second on a passed ball. With one out, Knowles drew a pass then Hurt’s drive to left was misplayed, loading the bases. But Allen was forced at the plate on a grounder to third by Kelly and Hurt was retired on a bouncer to third by Hastings as Tri-County escaped.

Hurt retired the first two batters in the bottom of the third on groundballs to Schmidt at second. But an errors on three straight batters extended the inning and a subsequent single to right drove in two, tying the game.

Meanwhile, the Tri-County pitcher settled in and retired 12 in a row before issuing a one-out walk to Orender in the top of the seventh.

Hurt hit a batter in the third and gave way to East who got out of the inning with a strikeout and a grounder to third. He worked around a hit batsman in the fifth then, with help from his defense, kept Tri-County off the board in the sixth despite a pair of singles.

The seventh, however, began with a double and a walk. A bunt single loaded the bases. East struck out the next batter but his next pitch was lined to left for the game-winning hit.
