Bryant alum hired as new University of Texas women’s coach

A former Bryant Lady Hornets basketball star, Karen Aston, has been hired as the head basketball[more] coach at the University of Texas.

Aston was the starting point guard on the 1981-82 Bryant team, which won the program’s first State and Overall State tournament championships. She was a two-time first-tream all-State player and played for two seasons for the Lady Trojans at UALR before transferring to Ouachita Baptist University.

The Bryant team in 1981-82, which was coached by Tom Webb, also included Tina Webb, who went on to star at the University of Arkansas-Monticello leading the nation in rebounding one year there. Cheryl Hall, a top track performer who ran at the University of Arkansas, and post player Jill Self were also members of the team.

Aston had been an assistant at Texas and Baylor before serving as head coach at Charlotte and North Texas. She’d coached at Vilonia and Fort Smith Northside high schools before joining the Baylor staff.
