PEARCY — While the freshman team and Bryant White were waiting out a storm that eventually led to the postponement of their games at Cabot, the Bryant Blue Hornets eighth grade team went to Lake Hamilton and won 12-6.
The game, played in a driving rain, marked the first time in four years that the Bryant Bethel team has beaten Lake Hamilton, according to head coach Donaven Sims.[more]
”The game was won up front in the trenches,” Sims said. “Our offensive linemen Scott Mead, Ben Yeldell, Tanner Rich, Seth Hoffmans, Tanner Gullett, and Colton Caviness as well as tight ends Chase Christie and Davis Nossaman and fullback Matt Mears did a great job of making holes for Bryce Denker.”
Denker picked up 102 yards on 23 carries and scored the decisive touchdown from 5 yards out on the second snap of the fourth quarter.
“The defense was once again stellar, behind the leadership of Coach Chase Meyers,” Sims added. “They made big play after big play.”
Lake Hamilton scored its lone touchdown late in the first quarter to take a 6-0 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, Christie dashed 78 yards for an answering TD to tie it 6-6.
For the rest of the first half, the two teams traded field position.
To start the second half, the Hornets put together a 68-yard drive that ate up the entire third quarter, setting up Denker’s go-ahead touchdown run.
The defense made it stand up for the victory.
The Bryant Blue team will wrap up the 2009 season at home on Tuesday, Nov. 3, against their counterparts from Benton. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
