Concert to benefit local kidney transplant recipient

A benefit concert for Jason Lester will be held at the Bryant Middle School gym on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 1 to 4 p.m., featuring Sun performing artists Sonny Burgess and the Legendary Pacers plus local band Exit 123.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children with the proceeds going toward the medical bills for Lester who has recently had two kidney transplants. The second transplant, performed on Dec. 29, 2009, with a kidney donated by his brother Jimmy Lester “is working great,” according to Jason Lester’s wife, Stephanie.[more]

“The first (kidney transplant) on June 24 was from a cadaver and never functioned after placement,” she said. “Following that, my husband had a major blood clot in a main vein in his leg that was discovered.

“All the medical bills are charged to the recipient,” Stephanie Lester continued. “We do have private insurance but our out-of-pocket amounts to approximately $7,600 and that doesn’t include anything after January 1 of this year. We are expecting to be right around $10,000.”

Jason and Stephanie Lester, active members of First Southern Baptist Church of Bryant, have four children, Brittney Ball, 16; Brennan Lester, 9, Braydan Lester, 8; and Brooklyn Lester, 4. Jason works for Performance Food Group in Little Rock and serves as a high school football referee for the Arkansas Activities Association.

Jimmy Lester, a Transportation Sergeant at the Saline County Detention Facility, and his wife Kim, who works at Fleming Electric, have two children, Brittany, a graduate of Bryant High School, and Trent, who attends Bauxite High School.

David Grappe of Bryant, owner of Razorsharp Car Wash and Service and a member of Exit 123, is organizing the event.
