Freshman girls struggle in matches with North Little Rock, Mount

It was a rough week for the Bryant Lady Hornets freshman volleyball team as they absorbed a loss at home to North Little Rock, 12-25, 22-25 on Tuesday, and at Mount St. Mary Academy, 15-25, 12-25, on Thursday.

The Lady Hornets include Jenna Acheson, Aubree Allen, Ashlea Brazil, Ashlee Caton, Stormi Chaloner, Kaley Coppock, Hannah Crouch, Dezarea Duckworth, Kaitlyn Greer, Nicole Guyett, Kayla Jolley, Jacie McMahan, Mekaylah Muhammad, Breanna Sanders, Courtnie Schultz, Becka Shaddon, Erica Smith and Katy Stillman.[more]

Head coach Monica Parish said the team’s hitting was still a little timid for the freshman level.

“We’ll volley with someone all day but our hitters are more worried about getting their hits in than putting a lot of power behind them,” she said. “That’s okay for eighth grade but, against freshmen, those hits get dug up easier.”

Parish also noted that going into Tuesday’s match, the Lady Hornets had been off through a three-day weekend and were limited in what they could do on Friday.

“Our serving was a lot worse in the first game than it has been all season,” she acknowledged. “We were just a little rusty. We settled down and played much better in the second game but North Little Rock just had the momentum.”

Ashlee Caton took over service after a side-out at 16 points for Bryant in the second game and served them to 22. Breanna Sanders served for three points. Kaitlyn Greer and Kaley Coppock contributed aces along the way. Deserea Duckworth, Aubree Allen and Greer each had a kill.

On Thursday, Caton, Kayla Jolley and Greer each had aces in service.

“Mount had two very good outside hitters,” Parish noted. “And anytime you go to Mount, you’ve got to adjust to the low ceiling. There’s no way to practice for that. And the acoustics make it very hard to communicate.

“But we’ve got things we need to fix,” she added. “We’re just going to work hard and see what we can do.”

The team will return to action on Monday at home against Conway Blue.
