Game and Fish program presents grant to Hurricane Creek Elementary

Hurricane Creek Elementary School was presented a $3,300 grant from the Arkansas Game and Fish Schoolyard Habitat Program, Tuesday April 29.

The Arkansas Game and Fish awards the grants based on wildlife habitat, student participation and use of native species. The program is funded by the state’s conservation license plate sales.

Pat Knighton, Project Wild Coordinator, made the presentations.

“The most important element of the program is student participation,” Knighton said. “Students plan, develop and maintain the project, which educates them on wildlife and the outdoors.”

Hurricane Creek’s outdoor classroom will be developed and cared for by the school’s fourth and fifth grade Green Team members. The area already has a pavilion and seating which students currently use for weather projects.

“The addition of plants and beds will provide an environment and habitat for butterflies, allowing students to experience hands-on learning for years to come,” said Lisa Mundy, project coordinator.
