Next generation leaders visit Arkansas State Capitol

By Devin Sherrill, Director of Communications for Bryant Public Schools

Hurricane Creek Elementary students enjoyed a day of education and leadership training during a recent tour of the state Capitol building. The students, part of the newly formed student council, are learning what it takes to become great leaders who serve their school and community.

During their tour of the Capitol, students gained history and facts about the center of state government and law making. The tour also offered a glimpse of the people who helped shape Arkansas.

Senator Jeremy Hutchinson of Benton treated students to a tour of the Senate and House Chambers. Senator Hutchinson encouraged the students to become great leaders by improving their character.

“Doing the right thing now will make you a great leader in the future,” he explained. “There are all sorts of leadership roles you can have.”

Carlton Billingsley, Bryant business owner and parent of a student council member, was along for the trip and was invited to teach the essentials of leadership. He explained the importance of standing up for what is right and showing positive character. After teaching the five leadership qualities of responsibility, possibility, integrity, urgency and risk, Billingsley encouraged students to put those qualities into action. He ended the lesson with a quote from John Quincy Adams: ”If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”

Representative Kim Hammer of Benton spoke with students and explained the duties and procedures of the House of Representatives. He also shared information on how to become a page for the House of Representatives.

“We thank Senator Hutchinson, Mr. Billingsley and Representative Hammer for helping our students become the next generation of leaders in our state,” said Kelli Dockery, group sponsor and counselor at Hurricane Creek Elementary.
