FORT SMITH — The Bryant Lady Hornets finished a rugged weekend in Fort Smith with a[more] 61-37 loss to the Russellville Lady Cyclones at the 2011 Tournament of Champions at Fort Smith Northside High School.
The Lady Hornets got out to a faster start than they’d been able to in their previous two games at the tourney — losses to Fort Smith Northside and Ozark, Mo. But their 12-9 lead going into the second quarter disappeared when they were only able to score 5 points the rest of the half. Russellville surged to a 25-17 lead then erupted for 25 points in the third quarter to take control of the game. It was 50-27 going into the final eight minutes.
After struggling with their shooting in Friday’s game against Ozark, the Lady Hornets improved some on Saturday but Russellville used its size to pulled down 36 rebounds including a whopping 17 on the offensive end, producing 13 more shot attempts. The Lady Cyclones also converted 16 of 22 free throws while the Lady Hornets were converting just 8 of 17.
Four Russellville players scored in double figures, led by 6-0 senior Lindsey Glover wi4th 16 points. Kaylee Wiedower, a 5-10 senior, added 15 points with Mary Carol Davis, a 5-11 senior, pitching in with 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Guard Susan Taylor had 10 points as well for Russellville.
For Bryant, Kiara Moore finished with 12 points. Dezerea Duckworth added 7, Taneasha Rhode and Logan Davis 6 each and Callie Hogancamp 4. Kristin Scarlett connected on a pair of free throws.
The Lady Hornets will try to bounce back on Tuesday when they travel to Lake Hamilton.
