School board informed that first-day enrollment up 436 from last year

All four construction projects were completed enough to be occupied on the first day of school for the[more] Bryant district Monday. According to Richard Stipe, Construction Manager, there are still small details to be completed on all of the sites but all four received certificates of occupancy and passes all inspections.

“There are currently no major or outstanding pending issues,” Stipe reported at the August School Board meeting on Monday night.

Enrollment is up 436 from the first day of last year; up 251 in elementary and up 195 in high school. Late enrollments continued on the first day of school. There are 724 kindergartners this year and there were only 608 last year.

The 2012 Academic Data Report was presented by Debbie Bruick, Assistant Superintendent. The district has yet to receive final data reports from the state but preliminary data has shown significant growth in the elementary schools and secondary areas within math and literacy. Even though the district has experienced high test scores in previous years and diverse populations at the elementary level, improvements continue to happen regarding test scores.

The number of students that took the ACT for the 2011-12 school year was at 382. In the 2010-11 school year, 427 students took the ACT. The board was concerned at the drop in the number of students that took the exam and therefore urged that more information be given to parents and students about the importance and significance of the ACT.

Peyton Jenkins, class of 2012, was recognized for being deemed the 2012 Gatorade Player of the Year for State of Arkansas for her exemplary senior year on the Bryant softball team. Jenkins helped lead the Lady Hornets to their third Class 7A state championship with a 33-0 record.

Head softball coach Debbie Clark was recently honored as well by the Arkansas Activities Association by being named head coach for the 2012 Arkansas High School All-Star game. She has been the head coach at Bryant for three years.

Bryant baseball was not left out of the recognitions since Nate Rutherford, Bryant senior, was named the 2012 7A State Baseball Tournament Most Valuable Player and was also named a High School All-American by Louisville Slugger. Rutherford is a starting pitcher for the Hornets and will be entering his senior season this spring.
