Winfrey among finalists for Landers Award to be announced tonight

LITTLE ROCK — Bryant’s Dillon Winfrey, a starter at wide receiver, cornerback and on special teams, has been[more] named one of 12 finalists for the prestigious Landers Award.

The award ceremony will be televised on KATV Channel 7 on Thursday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m.

Along with Winfrey, the finalists are Neal Burcham of Greenbrier, Zach Conque of Little Rock Catholic, Fredi Knighton of Pulaski Academy, Ajalen Holley of Hot Springs Lakeside, Jeremy Sprinkle of White Hall, Dezmond Stegal of Searcy, Derek Keaton of Camden Fairview, Kaylon Cooper of North Little Rock, Kenneth Dixon of Strong, Shaquille Jones of Fort Smith Northside and Levi Runyan of Lake Hamilton.

The winner will be awarded a commemorative ring and a $3,000 scholarship.

As a senior, Winfrey rarely left the field. On offense, he caught 43 passes for 640 yards and eight touchdowns, rushed six times for 24 yards. Defensively, he was in on 63 tackles including 34 unassisted and eight for losses. He broke up a team-high 10 passes, intercepted three including one he returned for a touchdown, recovered a fumble and blocked a kick. He also average 26.6 yards per return on kickoffs.

"The Landers Award recognizes superior athletic achievement on the Arkansas high school football field and embodies the spirit of courage and dedication all student athletes must master to become the best-of-the-best," according to KATV.
