Arkansas champs, including Bryant’s Hendricks, edged in Regional opener

The ASC Cougars U18 girls soccer team is in the Region 3 National Championship playoffs in Baton Rouge, La., representing Arkansas as the U18 state champions.

This afternoon, they lost a heartbreaker to the Texas state champions from Dallas, 1-0, in the first game of pool play at the tournament.[more]

It was 0-0 halfway though the second half. Coming out of a time out/water break (due to extreme heat), forward Tarra Hendricks of Bryant, got a shot away from the corner off the lower inside opposite post that bounced right to the goalie for the Cougars’ first near miss.

With 10 minutes left, Dallas scored on a eye-catching cross the body kick that just made it past the ASC goalie Emily Warn of Cabot.

ASC had one more good shot on goal with about two minutes left, from forward Kendra Hendrix from Little Rock Central, that went off the top goalpost back into play, but could not put in by the Cougars.

Tarra Hendricks’ father Todd reported that ASC dominated most of the second half but couldn't get a goal. While both teams bounced back and fourth in the first half no one could take control.

ASC plays North Carolina Saturday night at 6 and the host team Sunday at 4 p.m. The winner of the bracket moves on to play in the final four of the region, Monday-Wednesday. The event also includes champions from Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Oklahoma.

Last year, ASC made it out of the bracket but couldn't advance to the National Championships.
