BHS swimming and diving team opens season Saturday at OBU

Led by juniors Lindsey Butler and Minki Kang, the Bryant High School swimming and diving team gets the 2013-14 season underway this Saturday at a meet hosted by Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia.

Butler, a two-time All-State performance, and Kang, who earned that honor last year, both set new records at the State meet last February. Butler set her new mark in the 100 yard backstroke, finishing in 58.23 to beat the 2010 mark of 58.30. Kang’s new standard came in the 500 yard freestyle. His time of 4:32.52 eclipsed the record of 4:35.34 set in 2009.

The Lady Hornets also have back all four members of the 200 medley relay team that earned medals at State last year. Along with Butler, that’s sophomores Libby Thompson, Katie Higgs and Kalee Jackson.

The Hornets also have junior Justin Combs returning after he medaled in the one-meter dive competition at State.

The girls team also includes, seniors Jacey Bittle, Mikayla Douglas, Kaitlin Howey, Deidra Reeves, Rachel Vos and Lauren Wood; juniors Ploy Freebairn, Devin Hester, Tiffany Robinson, Julianna Shelton, and Jordan Tarvin; sophomores Grace Byars, Shawn Peairson, and Reagan Smith; along with freshmen Jamie Hammers, Ellie Hooten, Elizabeth Milam, Allison Mundy and Emily Stipe.

The boys team also includes senior Scott Mead; juniors Andrew Ball, Jim Dellorto, Lucas Reitenger, Dru Wen, and Ryan West; sophomores Fonzee E. Bittle, Chandler Reep, Trace Rhodes, Cody Tarvin, Derek Vos and Ray Weldon; with freshman Mac J. Carder.

The BHS team will host its first home meet at the Aquatic Center at Bishop Park on Thursday, Nov. 14.

The team is coached by Angel Dale with assistance from Lisa Mundy.
