BHS teams second to hosts at meet in Little Rock

LITTLE ROCK — Jessica Butler won two individual events and contributed to winning efforts in two relays for the Bryant Lady Hornets, while Michael Higgs produced a first-place finish for the Hornets on Saturday at the UALR pool. Both Bryant teams finished second to the hosts of the meet. For the girls, Mount St. Mary Academy edged the Lady Hornets 383-357. Little Rock Central was third with 339 followed by Magnolia (268), Maumelle (125) and Pulaski Academy (40).

Little Rock Catholic won the boys team title with 467 points. Bryant finished with 359 points. Magnolia was third with 348 followed by Central (331), Pulaski Academy (55), Conway (20), Maumelle (13) and Central Arkansas Christian (5).

Butler won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 59.31 and the 50 free in 26.28. Reagan Smith was sixth in the 50 with a time of 29.25. In the 100, Taylor Vaughn was sixth in 1:14.29 and Erica Legate was 10th in 1:20.31.

In the relays, Bryant won the 200-yard medley, with Taylor Wilson, Jamie Hammers, Butler and Smith combining on a 2:11.75. in the 200 free, Smith, Helen Woodham, Wilson and Butler teamed up on a 1:55.78.

Higgs won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:10.10. Bryant’s Jacob Rhode was sixth in 2:38.82 and Dylan Althen was ninth in 2:50.90.

The Hornets’ quartet of Ray Weldon, Chandler Reep, Kyle Henry and Higgs placed second in the 200 freestyle relay. Their 1:39.28 was second only to Magnolia’s 1:36.81. Caivon Crosby also produced second-place points in the one-meter dive.

Wilson and Erin Vaughn contributed second-place finishes. In the 100-yard butterfly, Vaughn finished in 1:17.67, just off the pace of Pulaski Academy’s Ande Harris at 1:07.62). Hammers was third in 1:24.43.

Wilson’s 6:06.89 was second in the 500 free. Mount St. Mary’s Alexis McCauley on in 5:58.08. Woodham finished fifth in 7:01.34.

Wilson was also third in the 200 free, finishing in 2:24.57, with Taylor Vaughn fifth in 2:41.33 and Elizabeth Milam ninth in 2:55.51. Erin Vaughn’s 2:53.57 was good for third in the 200 IM with Woodham fifth in 3:00.60.

In addition, Bryant’s girls were third in the 400-yard freestyle relay with Erin and Taylor Vaughn combining with Woodham and Hammers on a 4:49.27.

Three Lady Hornets scored in the 100-yard breaststroke led by Hammers who was seventh in 1:30.04. Elizabeth Milam was eighth in 1:33.24 and Paris Works finished ninth in 1:33.78. Erica Legate added 10th-place points in the 100 backstroke, turning in a 1:36.51.

The boys were fourth in the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay. In the medley, Weldon, Reep, Higgs and Henry combined on a 1:55.73. In the 400 free, Tristan Hoerschelmann, Alex Ball, Trace Rhode and Fonzee Bittle finished in 4:10.00.

Trace Rhode, Kyle Henry and Jacob Rhode each scored in the 500 free. Trace Rhode was third in 5:54.00 with Henry fourth in 6:01.67 and Jacob Rhode sixth in 6:14.96.

Weldon picked up fourth-place points in the 100 backstroke, touching in 1:05.33 with Trevor Ball seventh in 1:11.90. Weldon and Ball also scored in the 50 free. Weldon’s 26.05 was good for fifth. Ball was 11th in 28.03 with Zachary Milam picking up points in 13th with a time of 29.37.

Higgs took fourth in the 100 butterfly, just missing a State qualifying time at 59.64. Reep was ninth in 1:07.03 followed by Hoerschelmann 11th in 1:15.80.

Four Hornets scored in the 200 free. Henry was sixth (2:13.50), Trace Rhode seventh (2:14.51), Alex Ball eighth (2:16.15) and Zachary Milam 11th (2:35.25).

Reep led a contingent of three that scored in the 100-yard breaststroke. He was sixth in 1:12.06. Hoerschelmann was 10th in 1:18.69 and Bittle 11th in 1:18.84.

In the 100 free, Alex Ball (10th, 1:01.29), Bittle (11th, 1:01.30) and Althen (15th, 1:07.66) all added to the Hornets’ point total.

Bryant is scheduled to complete the regular season with a meet at UCA in Conway this Thursday, Feb. 4. The team will then host the South District championship meet on Feb. 12, at the Aquatic Center at Bishop Park.
