Black Sox Juniors dispatch Continental Express

By Rob Patrick

Though they finished with eight players after Josh Davis was hit in the[more] face with a pitch, the Bryant Black Sox Junior American Legion team overwhelmed their counterparts for Little Rock Continental Express Thursday night, 23-3 in four innings.

Bryant had 15 hits to take advantage of eight walks, two hit batsmen and three errors. Tyler Green went 4 for 5 with three runs batted in while Brodie Nixon added three hits and four RBIs. Ozzie Hurt drove in two to go with his three hits.

Meanwhile, right-hander Cody Gogus held Continental hitless through three innings. Trailing 23-0, the Express managed three runs on three hits in the top of the fourth before the game concluded.

The win improved the Sox to 9-1 on the season.

Davis, who was down after being hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the third, was taken to Children’s Hospital. No word yet on his status, though he was able to walk off the field with a little help.

Bryant took the lead with five runs in the bottom of the first. Green ripped a shot towards short that took a bad hop past Continental’s Ryan Panyard and rolled into the gap in left-center for a double. Nixon singled him in and advanced to second on an outfield error.

With one out, Gogus lined an RBI single to left. Walks to Tryce Schalchlin, Davis and Zack Graddy followed, forcing in a run. Schalchlin scored on a wild pitch then Chase Tucker bounced into a force at second as Davis came home, making it 5-0.

Continental managed a base runner in the top of the secone. Payton White walked but the Sox turned a nice doubleplay started by Schachlin at short. He threw to Ozzie Hurt at second from his seat and Hurt relayed to first in time.

The first of two 9-run frames came in the second for Bryant. This time, Green got things started with a triple to left-center. Nixon doubled him home then scored on a single by Marcus Wilson. Gogus was hit by a pitch and, after a double steal, Schalchlin singled in a run. Gogus scored on a groundout by Davis. With Schalchlin at third, Graddy walked then Tucker lifted a fly to center that figured to be at least a sacrifice fly but when the ball was misplayed by outfielder Dylan Fryar both Schalchlin and Graddy scored.

Tucker wound up at third and Hurt singled him in. Green bounced into a force but Nixon reached on an error and Wilson walked. A wild pitch allowed Green to score then Gogus singled in Nixon to make it 14-0.

The Express managed to get two runners aboard in the top of the third when walks were issued to Taylor Dunn and Panyard. An errant pickoff throw allowed them to move to second and third but they were stranded when Gogus retired the next two batters. A nice defensive play by Graddy, the Bryant catcher, on a dribbler in front of the plate.

In the bottom of the third, after Davis was hit and attended to, Schalchlin was allowed to come in and run for his teammate. But he was doubled off first when Graddy’s liner was picked off by Panyard.

But a walk to Tucker started the carousel again. Hurt’s first single of the inning followed. Both scored on a long double by Green. Nixon’s second double plated Green.

A walk to Wilson was followed by Gogus getting hit with a pitch. Schalchlin singled in a run and, after skipping Davis’ spot in the order, Graddy drew an RBI walk.

Continental’s third pitcher came on and issued a run-scoring walk by Tucker. Singles and Hurt and Green drove in a run and another came home when he was struck by a delivery.

With two outfielders behind him, Gogus retired the first batter of the top of the fourth but then an infield hit by Jacob White spoiled his no-hit bid. Payton White looped a single to center then an error loaded the bases. A run scored on a wild pitch and another came home when Bo Turney grounded out. An infield hit by Blake Webb drove in Wright but the game ended when Gogus got Panyard to bounce out to third.

The Sox are set to host a doubleheader with Texarkana on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
