Bruins hold off Hornets’ second-half push at Coke Classic

FORT SMITH — Tra Johnson, Lawson Korita and Tre Bruce combined for 46 points as the Pulaski Academy Bruins pinned a 63-55 loss on the Bryant Hornets in the first round of the 2014 Coke Classic at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith’s Stubblefield Center on Monday.

The Hornets are set to return to action on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., against Charleston, which lost to Fort Smith Northside, 79-59, on Monday.

Romen Martin led Bryant with 21 points and six rebounds before fouling out of the game. Kevin Hunt added 10 points with Calvin Allen and Lowell Washington scoring 8 each. Wesley Peters had 4, Kaleb Turner and Antavious Lewis 2 each.

The Bruins led 10-8 after a quarter but surged to 31-18 advantage by halftime. The Hornets made a run in the third quarter, cutting the margin to one in the late stages of the period.

“We missed two free throws to take the lead and then (Pulaski Academy) went on a little run,” said Bryant coach Mike Abrahamson.

The Hornets forced 18 turnovers but the Bruins out-rebounded them 38-20. Pulaski Academy’s Zach Fryxell collected 12 caroms to go with 10 points.
