Bryant (Daves) notches second pool play victory at 8U Regional

MOBILE, Ala. — The Bryant 8U All-Stars, coached by Josh Daves improved to 2-0 in pool play Thursday afternoon with a 6-2 win over the Pascagoula, Miss., All-Stars at the 2016 Cal Ripken 8U Southwest Regional Tournament.

Earlier in the day, Daves’ team defeated Clark County, 7-0.

The team includes Luke Andrews, Jonathan Carter, Cohen Chalmers, Grant Daves, Kolby Duncan, Dante Hernandez, Colt Martin, Dawson Martin, Barrett Royal, Jake Taylor, Chance Thompson and Chase Trimble.

Bryant resumes pool play on Friday at noon against Citronelle, Ala., then takes on Walker, La., on Saturday at 9 a.m. Bracket play begins Saturday afternoon.

Bryant led 2-0 going into the sixth inning, with a run in the first and another in the fourth. But a four-run sixth proved to be the difference when Pascagoula broke through with a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth.

Colt Martin, Taylor and Trimble each had two hits.

Taylor scored the run in the fifth. He singled to start the game and advanced to second on a groundout by Duncan. Colt Martin singled up the middle to put runners at first and third and Chalmers grounded into a force at second as Taylor scored.

In the fourth, Duncan’s grounder to first was booted. Colt Martin reached as Duncan was forced out at second but Royal singled. Chalmers grounded into a force at second but Dawson Martin got the run in when his grounder to third was misplayed.

Up to then, Pascagoula hadn’t managed to get more that one runner aboard in any inning. In the bottom of the fourth, however, a single and an error had runners at second and third with two down. But the next batter popped to Taylor at first to end the threat.

Bryant’s game-breaking sixth started with a single by Taylor. With one out, Colt Martin cracked a base hit and, with two down, Chalmers’ drive to center was misplayed allowing Taylor to score.

Dawson Martin doubled in a run then two scored when Hernandez’ grounder to first got through, making it 6-0.

A pair of errors and a pair of singles produced the Mississippi team’s two runs in the bottom of the sixth but Bryant threw out a runner at second and, moments later, a foul pop caught by Chalmers, the catcher, ended the game.

Great job in winning the 1st two games. Keep up the good work. Is there a site that posts the scores for the various pools I can look at?
