Bryant netters play Benton close but win just one match

BENTON — All the singles matches were close but the Bryant Hornets tennis team came up on the short end on all but one match against their rivals from Benton at Tyndall Park on Tuesday.

Bryant’s lone win came in doubles where Kyle Nossaman and Cade Howard combined to defeat Benton’s Clint Powell and Jake Jakonezak.[more]

The No. 1 boys singles and No. 2 girls singles both went to tiebreakers. Nossaman came back to tie his match 8-8 but then lost the tiebreaker 6-10. Whitney Butler and Benton’s Malika Akbar tied at 8-8 before Akbar captured the match winning the tiebreaker 10-6.

In boys No. 2 singles, Howard fell to Austin Willis, 2-8. In girls No. 1 singles, Benton’s Lauren Dudley edged Callie Hogancamp, 8-6.

In addition, Bryant’s Erica Pounders lost to Mariah Temple, 2-8, and Kristen Dudley was defeated by Emily Parker, 2-8.

In boys doubles, Malik Flint and Cody Higgins of Bryant lost to Ian McMahan and Dudley Stow, 0-8, while Nick Ross and Justin Travis fell to Benton’s John Stonesifer and Sam Anderson, 1-8.

For the girls, Allie Hogancamp and Payton Jenkins came up on the short side of a 5-8 match to Benton’s Abby McAtee and Parker.

Bryant is scheduled to host conference rival Conway at Otter Creek on Thursday, Sept. 9.
