Bryant’s Wells tosses six innings of shutout ball to earn first win

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Former Bryant Hornets’ star pitcher Ben Wells earned his first win of the[more] 2013 season for the Chicago Cubs' Class A Florida League affiliate in Daytona. The right-hander pitched six shutout innings of his team’s 8-1 win over the Clearwater Threshers, an affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Wells, the opening day starter for the Daytona team, was making his third start of the season. He walked one, scattered five hits and struck out four in his six frames of work.

Now 1-0, he has a 3.21 earned run average over his three outings. In 14 innings, he’s allowed 19 hits, walked five and struck out eight for the Cubs who are 6-5 on the season, tied for second in the Florida State League standings.
