Clutch free throws cap off comeback win for Bethel boys

Sam Chumley coolly drained two free throws with :04 on the clock as the Bryant Blue Hornets eighth grade team of Bethel Middle School rallied for a 27-26 win over Lighthouse Charter on Thursday night at the Bethel gym.

The seventh grade team was also victorious, pulling away for a 51-23 final.

The eighth grade team trailed 6-3 after quarter, 10-6 at the half and 20-16 going into the fourth quarter.

“Chumley finished up a wild flurry at the end,” noted Hornets coach Derek McGrew. “We trailed by 8 with 2:30 left. Keith West hit two big 3’s down the stretch and Luke Curtis hit two free throws to give us our first lead with :20 left.”

Chumley finished with 13 points. West added 9, Brandon Shirlee 3 and Luke Curtis 2 as the Hornets improved to 5-6 on the season going into a trip to Lake Hamilton on Monday, Jan. 27.

In the seventh grade game, Tyler O’Neil poured in 19 points and Randy Thomas had 11 to lead Bethel to victory.

The Hornets opened up a 17-4 lead by the end of the opening period. It was 27-8 at the half then 43-14 going into the fourth quarter.

Will McEntire finished with 6 points. Henry Terry and Alex Blair pitched in with 4 each. Josh Robinson added 3 with C.J. Davis and Jeff Nelson scoring 2 apiece.

The seventh grade Hornets are set to host Lake Hamilton for A and B games on Thursday, Jan. 30.
