Defense of Bryant 7’s continues to stymie Regional opponents

LONG BEACH, Miss. — The Bryant All-Stars once again stepped up defensively to hold an opponent[more] to just four hits as the team piled up runs when it was their turn at the plate at the 7-year-old Southwest Regional Tournament on Friday. Coming off a 14-0 romp over Jonesboro Blue on Thursday, Bryant overwhelmed Orange Grove, Miss., 15-1.

The 7-year-old team, managed by Jeremy Stovall, is Garrison Blacklaw, Brady Brower, Reid Catton, Clay Crawford, Gage Horn, Dillon Hunt, Grant Johnson, Carson Kemp, Gideon Motes, Carson Nagle, Hank Penfield, and Caden Stovall.

Catton, Kemp, Johnson, Horn, Stovall, Motes and Crawford each had two hits in the game. Johnson drove in three, as did Penfield who slugged a bases-loaded triple during a six-run second.

In fact, Bryant made quick work of it, scoring the six-run limit in the second and third innings then holding Orange Grove in the top of the fourth to end the game.

Bryant took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Catton opened the inning with a double then Kemp singled to center. Blacklaw picked up an RBI with a groundout to second then Johnson jacked a double to drive in Kemp. He would score an out later on Horn’s two-bagger to center.

To set the table for Penfield’s three-run rip, Stovall, Motes and Brower each singled. Brower’s came on a bunt. The very next play, Penfield pounded one to left for the triple than made it 6-0.

Crawford singled him in then with two out, Blacklaw singled. Johnson drove them both home with a double to center, extending the lead to 9-0.

Orange Grove managed its lone run in the top of the third but the Bryant onslaught resumed in the bottom of the inning. Base hits by Hunt, Horn and Nagle produced a run. Stovall doubled in another. Motes got Nagle home with a base hit.

With one out, Penfield lifted a pitch to left for a sacrifice fly. Crawford singled in Mote then base hits from Catton and Kemp capped things off.
